Ben Roethlisberger and David DeCastro dealing with injuries heading into Week 2

Mike Tomlin listed some big names at his weekly press conference regarding injuries heading into Week 2.

The Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t just stumble out of the gate in Week 1 while tying with the Cleveland Browns, but they are also dealing with some injuries heading into their Week 2 contest at Heinz Field vs. the Kansas City Chiefs.

The hamstring injury to Joe Haden which caused him to leave the game was already known, and the reports which circulated last Monday evening of it being a mild strain were verified by head coach Mike Tomlin during his weekly press conference.

The Steelers will likely rest Haden for the first few days of the week, or have him be a limited participant, before testing the injury. As anyone who has ever injured a hamstring knows, they can linger, so expect the team to always think about Haden’s long-term health compared to the short-term.

If Haden were unable to play, Cameron Sutton would fill in opposite Artie Burns.

With Haden’s injury known, Tomlin revealed two Pro Bowlers were also dealing with injuries. First listed was All-Pro guard David DeCastro. DeCastro left the game briefly during the Browns, and most assumed it was to have his hand taped/wrapped.

Turns out he fractured his hand.

The big question with DeCastro’s injury is how the medical staff will deal with the fracture. If they can put a soft cast on it, which would allow DeCastro to still use his fingers, it would be the best-case scenario. If they have to put a hard cast on the hand it could make life more difficult for the offensive guard.

The biggest injury news was when Tomlin talked about Ben Roethlisberger dealing with an injury to his elbow.

Some fans might think this is a reason why Roethlisberger’s play was sub par, but Tomlin did not give his star quarterback a scapegoat for his 3 interception, 2 fumble day.

The first reported practice, regarding injuries, will be Wednesday, so stay tuned to BTSC for updates on these injuries, and any other additions, as the team prepares for the Chiefs to come to town.
