Steelers Injury Report: David DeCastro and Marcus Gilbert sit out practice on Thursday

The Steelers saw three starting offensive linemen miss practice on Thursday, while Joe Haden was making more-encouraging progress with his return from a hamstring injury.

The list of names on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ first official injury report of the week looks depressingly long for such an early point in the year. Thankfully, of the seven names featured on Thursday, only two were held out of practice for injury reasons, and there are positive indications the Steelers might see one or two players return in Week 3 who were absent last Sunday.

After practicing in some capacity on Wednesday, David DeCastro reportedly left the field in some pain toward the end of the session and it is perhaps no surprise to learn he was among the names sitting out. Speaking to Teresa Varley of Steelers.com, DeCastro sounded rather frustrated by the injury,

“I am just making sure it’s protected and I don’t make it worse. I don’t want to take one step forward and four steps back and miss more time. We have a good staff. They are being smart, we are all being smart. I want to get back out there as much as possible. I don’t like it, it’s abnormal, but it’s part of it.”

While Marcus Gilbert is dealing with a hamstring injury, he’s likely to be given as much rest time as possible before a decision needs to be made about his availability for Monday. If he cannot play, rookie Chukwuma Okorafor would be the next man up in his place.

There was better news about the health of Joe Haden, Ramon Foster and Tyson Alualu after all three were full participants in training once again. Haden was apparently limited the day before, so his increased involvement is an encouraging sign. The veteran cornerback was optimistic about his progress when talking to Varley.

‘It feels pretty good. I am excited. I am feeling healthy. Glad I have a little more time. This is the best-case scenario.”

While Maurkice Pouncey wasn’t practicing, it would seem he was the beneficiary of a coaches day off and he should be back at work on Friday. But the addition of Morgan Burnett as a limited participant was an unexpected inclusion, and his status will be one to watch in the coming days.
