With a likely roster spot needing to be filled, what move will the Steelers make prior to Week 6?

The Pittsburgh Steelers have at least one roster spot to likely fill, but what moves will be made to accommodate?

During our Steelers Preview podcast, you can listen to it below, we were discussing the injury situation for the Pittsburgh Steelers heading into their Week 6 game vs. the Los Angeles Chargers. As we discussed injuries to players like Jaylen Samuels and James Washington, Dave Schofield asked what the Steelers will do from a roster perspective.

In other words, if the Steelers want to go into the Sunday Night Football game with just two running backs, they are fine with James Conner and Benny Snell Jr. However, if they wanted to promote Trey Edmunds from the practice squad, they would have to free up a roster spot for him.

If Mason Rudolph is ruled out of the game on Sunday, which would only happen at this point if he suffered a setback in his progression through the NFL concussion protocol, the team would possibly have to free up two spots on the roster to make room for Paxton Lynch to be promoted from the practice squad.

For the sake of this exercise, let’s assume Rudolph will be healthy enough to at least suit up on Sunday and the team only needs to make one roster spot available.

What move do they make?

Do you send a player to Injured Reserve, like Roosevelt Nix who hasn’t played a snap since Week 1? Or do you cut someone in hopes of re-signing them once Week 6 is officially in the books?

The Steelers don’t need to make this announcement anytime soon, but it is a game of which position can you afford to drop someone, and would they player be picked up by someone else? On the show, Bryan Davis suggested the possibility of Chukwuma Okorafor, who has yet to dress for a game this year, being released to make room, but Dave followed with a great point on how Okorafor would be picked up considering just how bad the offensive line play is across the league currently.

My suggestion was none other than Daniel McCullers being let go. Another name which was tossed around was Anthony Chickillo. While many might suggest Donte Moncrief, you have to realize the injury to Washington likely handcuffs the team when it comes to their wide receiver depth heading into Week 6.

So, what move do you see them making, and how will they create the necessary space to add someone to their roster? Let us know in the comment section below!!
