Chickillo was placed on the commissioners exempt list on Tuesday, October 22 following his arrest on October 20 outside of Uniontown, Pennsylvania. While on the list, Chickillo did receive a salary but did not count towards the Steelers’ 53-man roster. On Wednesday, charges against Chickillo were both withdrawn by the Fayette County district attorney, citing criminal prosecution was not warranted for the situation.
Drafted in the sixth round of the 2015 draft out of the University of Miami, Chickillo just signed a two-year, $8 million contract with the Steelers this off-season.
Dealing with a foot injury, Chickillo missed three games for the Steelers in 2019 due to injury and one due to being on the exempt list. In his three games played, Chickillo has 0.5 sacks in 44 defensive snaps. Chickillo is more noted for special teams play where he has logged 53 snaps.
While Chickillo is able to re-join the team, he could still face discipline from the NFL. In a statement released from the Steelers, general manager Kevin Colbert said, “Anthony Chickillo has been taken off the Exempt/Commissioners List by the NFL office, effective immediately. The league will continue to conduct an investigation of the incident, and we acknowledge that Anthony could still be subject to discipline by the Legal Office under the Personal Conduct Policy.”
To make room on the roster, the Steelers have released Jayrone Elliott. This is the third time Elliott has been released by the Steelers on the season as he has been on and off the roster several times. In 2019, Elliott has played in four games with the Steelers in which he has logged 14 defensive and 48 special team snaps. He has one tackle in 2019.
