The Pittsburgh Steelers are moving into Week 13 of the NFL regular season, and as the team prepares for the Cleveland Browns we continue to provide you with features, commentary and opinions to tide you over until the next game starts!
Today in the black-and-gold links article we take a look at how Myles Garrett’s indefinite suspension will impact the Browns, but especially this Sunday at Heinz Field.
Let’s get to the news:
- Sure, the Steelers won’t have Maurkice Pouncey available, but the Browns without Myles Garrett is a huge loss for the Browns in this huge AFC North grudge match.
Myles Garrett absence will bring different feel to Steelers’ rematch with Browns

If Devlin Hodges returns at quarterback, after guiding the Steelers to 13 second-half points in a 16-10 win at Cincinnati, Rudolph at least will be on the sideline and prepared to enter the game in case of injury or ineffectiveness.
Browns defensive end Myles Garrett and Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey won’t have that luxury. In fact, they won’t even be allowed inside the stadium. Garrett won’t suit up for the rest of the season — and maybe beyond — and Pouncey will finish up the second of his two-game suspension.
Who will benefit the most in the rematch? It could be the Steelers (6-5) despite opening as home underdogs to the Browns (5-6) for the first time since the 1989 season opener.
“Let’s be real,” outside linebacker Bud Dupree said. “Garrett not playing is great. Throw away everything that happened between him and Mason. Garrett is a special-type player. When he’s not on the field, it’s a big difference. We have to capitalize on that.”

- The Steelers defense can make the quarterback play almost insignificant, but can they get the job done?
Mark Madden: Steelers must hope defense makes QB pick insignificant
By: Mark Madde, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
Mason Rudolph stunk out the joint before being pulled in the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 16-10 win Sunday at Cincinnati. Devlin Hodges wasn’t much better, manufacturing a big play thanks to a James Washington stiff-arm, not his own brilliance.
Rudolph was 8 of 16 for 85 yards and one interception. Take away the 79-yard touchdown to Washington, and Hodges was 4 of 10 for 39 yards.
Who starts at QB doesn’t matter. Both choices are lousy.
Between Myles Garrett’s accusations of racism, two horrific performances and a demeanor that suggests he is permanently rattled, the last two weeks have damaged Rudolph’s career badly and perhaps for keeps.
Hodges has zero pedigree, but he’s cool as Freon compared to Rudolph. That factor alone makes him the logical pick.
But Rudolph and Hodges both stink. General manager Kevin Colbert better renew the search for Ben Roethlisberger’s long-term replacement because neither is it.
If the Steelers are lucky, quarterback will be a nonfactor the remainder of the season. Do the bare minimum. Just don’t lose the game. (They won’t be that lucky.)

- Don’t look now, but the Browns are back in playoff contention...unless the Steelers can put them out of their misery.
Browns emerge from chaos with playoff shot entering Steelers game
By: The Associated Press
The controversy-around-every-corner Browns emerged on the other side of the helmet-swinging Myles Garrett maelstrom a more connected team.
They bonded during a week loaded with suspensions, appeals, fines and outside noise by playing an incident-free game Sunday. There was no drama, no ejections, no glittery watches, illegal cleats or visors, no bashing of coach Freddie Kitchens, no season-ending injuries or any major issues against Miami.
How refreshing. Just some good, old-fashioned football at last.
Maybe this talented, overpublicized team is growing up. Maybe it’ll reach those high expectations heaped on them this summer.
Maybe the Browns, who will visit the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday to rekindle a rivalry that’s nuclear hot at the moment, will make the playoffs after all.
“We still have a lot of work to do,” center JC Tretter said Monday. “We are far from where we need to be and where we want to be.”
Under strange circumstances created by Garrett’s attack on Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph last week, the Browns got their third straight win, 41-24 at home against the overmatched Dolphins, a timely opponent for Cleveland to take out its frustrations.
And just like that, the Browns (5-6) have positioned themselves to make a postseason run that a few weeks ago seemed unlikely.
