Signed the last week to the practice squad, Hall was released on Tuesday as a part of the Steelers transactions which included moving Ulysees Gilbert III to IR, promoting Robert Spillane to the 53-man roster, and signing tight end Kevin Rader and wide receiver Terry Wright to the practice squad.
On Wednesday, the Steelers announced they had signed Sutton Smith to the practice squad. Smith was a sixth-round selection by the Steelers in the 2019 draft but failed to make the roster or the practice squad out of an injury-plagued training camp. Smith was at practice on Wednesday for the Steelers as he was recorded in several pictures posted to Steelers.com.
As for Hall, he re-joined the Steelers after his college career at Pitt where he amassed over 2,000 yards rushing and 21 touchdowns in four seasons. During his senior season, Hall rushed for 1,144 yards on 153 carries and 10 touchdowns.
Exactly why the Steelers felt the need to re-sign Hall days after releasing him could be tied to their health at the running back position. While James Conner did return to practice Wednesday on a limited basis, Benny Snell Jr. has already been ruled out for Sunday’s game. Additionally, Trey Edmunds and fullback Roosevelt Nix both missed practice Wednesday due to injury. The only running backs available fully to the Steelers a practice on Wednesday with Jaylen Samuels and Tony Brooks-James.
