Mock Draft Senario #3: Trading the House for Bush

For my third scenario, we have my least favorite scenario so far: trading up into the top ten for an ILB. I hate this, because the amount the Steelers would have to give up is astronomical. I also don’t think this scenario happens, given the Barron signing. If an ILB like Bush falls to 15, I could see a realistic trade up. That isn’t how this scenario works unfortunately.

Here is our scenario: Devin White is drafted by Tampa Bay fifth overall. With the Broncos and Bengals drafting soon, there is virtually no chance the Steelers will have Bush fall to them. We call up the Bills and trade our 1st, 2nd, 3rd(83rd overall), and 6th(192nd overall) for the Bills 1st and 4th round picks. This leaves us with the following picks: 1(9th), 3(66th), 4(112), 4(122), 5(141), 6(175), 6(207), and 7(219).

Round 1: Devin Bush, ILB, Michigan- With this huge trade up, the Steelers would be banking on Bush turning into an impact player for them. While considered slightly undersized, he has shown off explosive athleticism. The Steelers have been missing that since Shazier was injured. Bush should be an instant starter next to Vince Williams, while also serving as a dime backer option.

Round 3: Juan Thornhill, S, Virginia- With no pick in the second, the Steelers miss out on some of the better day two receiver. While the need is still there, the Steelers opt for a versatile defensive back in Thornhill. Thornhill has a knack for splash plays and would really shore up any depth in the secondary. He would also provide instant competition at FS.

Round 4: Emanuel Hall, WR, Missouri- The Steelers have a gaping hole left by Antonio Brown’s departure. Considering the amount of resources, it took to trade up for Bush, this need gets filled later than it should. Hall has good speed but is questionable just about everywhere else. He could develop but should at least start out as a deep threat.

Round 4: Inman Marshall, CB, USC- I’ve mocked Marshall before, so I won’t say much about him. He has a high floor low ceiling, as he should at least be able to become a solid rotational guy, but I doubt he ever becomes more than a #2 CB. In the 4th though, he should provide great depth and future starting potential.

Round 5: Jordan Brailford, OLB, Oklahoma St.- The Steelers need to add some depth at OLB, as they don’t have a true #3. While the hope is that Ola will make that jump, the room still needs to be more competitive.

Round 6: Keenan Brown, TE, Texas St.- Another position that should be addressed earlier, the TE’s behind Vance leave a lot to be desired. Brown played well at a small school, but he has questions about his competition and size, but the Steelers need to take a shot at someone here.

Round 6: Renell Wren, DL, Arizona St.- The Steelers need a 6th defensive lineman. While I’m not particularly high on Wren, he has some flashes on tape. Should at least jumpstart the competition for the number 6 spot.

Round 7: Travis Homer, RB, Miami- Steelers try to fill out the RB depth chart here. Homer isn’t exceptional, but could be a decent change of pace behind Conner and Samuels

What do you all think? With the steep price it cost to trade up, the Steelers really lost a lot of depth in this draft. Let me know what you thought in the comments and give me some other scenarios to work with!
