The Steelers placekicking situation was the worst in the league last season. Chris Boswell, who signed a big money deal two weeks before the season began, was dreadful. His stat line read like a horror novel.
He made a mere 13-of-20 field goal attempts for a league-worst 65% and missed five extra-point attempts.
The Steelers claim to be bringing competition in for Boz, but with four years remaining on his contract...it might be less than significant talent-wise. Here are a list of who’s available.
Will Lutz - New Orleans Saints (RFA)
Lutz is one of the finest in the league at his craft. The 25-year old missed only two-of-30 kicks in 2018 and two-of-eight over 50 the previous two seasons.
Stephen Gostkowski - New England Patriots
Since 1996, the Patriots have had only two kickers. While it seemed that Adam Viniateri would be known as the greatest and most-tenured at his position in franchise history, Gostkowski has more seasons and a higher average (98.9% to 98.2%) booting near Boston. The guy is as solid as they come and could kick for years more.
Ka’imi Fairbairn - Houston Texans
Making 37 successful kicks of 42 attempts is pretty solid and Fairbairn has been very solid for Houston. At 25, he would be a solid sign.
Matt Bryant - Atlanta Falcons
Bryant is ancient for NFL standards, but not really so as a Kicker. Plus, he is still productive. The veteran made 20-of-21 and 4-of-5 over 50 yards in an injury-plagued season.
Kai Forbath - Jacksonville Jaguars
The Steelers could have had Forbath late last year, but let Jacksonville snag him up. The 31-year old had a very productive 2017 and hit four-of-five for the Jags last season.
Other Notable Free Agent Kickers
Sebastian Janikowski - Seattle Seahawks
Cody Parkey - Chicago Bears
Dan Bailey - Minnesota Vikings
Cairo Santos - Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Phil Dawson - Arizona Cardinals
