There is a large contingent in the Pittsburgh Steelers fan base who puts an incredible amount of stock into who the team hosts for one of their 30 pre-draft visits. If someone suggests the team should take a specific player, and he wasn’t invited on a pre-draft visit, they feel the consideration should end there.
But what if they met with them at their Pro Day?
What if they had a sit down with them at the Scouting Combine?
Doesn’t matter...no pre-draft visit.
Well, for some players, like LSU cornerback Greedy Williams, he isn’t going on any pre-draft visits or holding private workouts for any NFL teams.
This per Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network:
A rarity: #LSU CB Greedy Williams has had no visits and it appears no private workouts, either. Some dinners and meetings, but that’s all. It’s not good, it’s not bad. It’s just rare. Only other player I can remember like this was Tyler Eifert, who had no questions coming out.— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) April 12, 2019
With this said, it would explain why the Steelers hosted CB Deandre Baker from Georgia, and Washington CB Byron Murphy, but not Williams.
While this practice is rare, it is just one case of why pre-draft visits are not the be-all-end-all when it comes to a team’s plans and preparation for the upcoming NFL Draft. There are times when players are selected who didn’t have a visit, and hadn’t really spent too much time with the organization.
The perfect example of this was in 2017 when the Steelers selected JuJu Smith-Schuster in the 2nd round, but had very little contact with the USC wideout prior to the draft. A combine meeting was the only contact the team had with Smith-Schuster prior to making him their second pick in that year’s draft.
In other words, with a player like Williams choosing to not attend any pre-draft visits, or if a team doesn’t meet with a specific player in a pre-draft visit, it is not a direct indicator of interest and/or desire for the team to add that player to the team’s roster throughout the seven round selection process.
