In case you didn’t know, the Pittsburgh Steelers will return to Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, PA in exactly 20 days of this article being published. With that, I decided to revive an old series we used to do as a lead up to training camp.
30 predictions in 30 days.
Myself and Simon Chester are alternating days giving a prediction for the upcoming season. Some will be team oriented, while others will be specific to individual players. Either way, read on to see the reason why we think today’s prediction will come to fruition, and why it might not come true. Give your thoughts in the comment section below the article.
Training camp is almost here! Here We Go!
Prediction: Bud Dupree will record 9 sacks in 2019.
Why it will happen: When the Pittsburgh Steelers decided to pick up Bud Dupree’s 5th year option, many fans were up in arms about the price tag for Dupree. In 2019 Dupree will earn over $9 million dollars — this for an outside linebacker whose highest sack total in his first four seasons is 6.
In 2018, Dupree was moved from the left side of the line to the right, switching with T.J. Watt, and he was able to tally 5.5 sacks in 16 games. While this isn’t a shining endorsement to Dupree hitting 9 sacks in 2019, if you re-watch the 2018 season you will see how Dupree was constantly around the quarterback. In fact, there were at least 3 sacks where Dupree had the quarterback dead to rights, but whiffed.
In other words, Dupree’s game is evolving, and he just needs to put the final touches on his play. With a goal of 9 sacks, Dupree isn’t as far off as many feel. Throw in the fact Watt is a budding superstar and Dupree should be able to have a career year in 2019, and that just mean a double-digit sack season.
Why it won’t happen: Dupree seems to have all the tangible tools to be elite, but there always seems to be something missing. This isn’t his first season, and the fact he has yet to even come close to double-digit sacks is telling.
As was mentioned in the previous section, Dupree did show improvement last season, but he was never able to close the deal. He resembled a car salesman who gets the customer in the store, they talk about the details, but when it comes for them to sign on the dotted line — he blows it.
Even with a goal of just 9 sacks, it seems to be too lofty for Dupree. Should he be able to achieve this goal? He should, but he never seems to live up to the first round tag he was given when the Steelers drafted him there out of Kentucky.
9 sacks? Doubtful.
