With the Pittsburgh Steelers set for their first preseason game this Friday vs. the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, there are certain position battles which are starting to heat up. Some have been talked about for months, while others have a new sense of purpose after a full week of training camp has come and gone.
What are some of the position battles the Steelers will have this entire preseason? Here is a list of a few noteworthy battles currently taking place:
Backup Quarterback
- Mason Rudolph vs. Joshua Dobbs
Right Tackle
- Matt Feiler vs. Chukwuma Okorafor vs. Jerald Hawkins
Inside Linebacker
- Vince Williams vs. Devin Bush vs. Mark Barron
Slot Cornerback
- Mike Hilton vs. Cameron Sutton
Backup Running back
- Benny Snell Jr. vs. Jaylen Samuels
Wide Receiver
- James Washington vs. Donte Moncrief vs. Diontae Johnson
Kicker
- Chris Boswell vs. Matthew Wright
These are just to name a few, and the Steelers are lucky the majority of their training camp battles are not for starting positions, but mainly as depth. It still begs the question of which of these battles is considered the most intriguing. The battle which could have the biggest impact on the 2019 team.
According to ESPN, the answer to that question resides in the battle for right tackle, the only starting position vacant along the team’s offensive line.
Right Tackle
Matt Feiler has the inside track after 10 starts a year ago and a strong training camp. But Chukwuma Okorafor turns 22 just before the first preseason game and has excellent feet, which helps offset the occasional camp struggle. Expect the Steelers to mix lineups throughout August to maximize competition between the two. -- Jeremy Fowler
There is no debate the Steelers camp battle at right tackle isn’t important, but would you say it is the biggest battle facing the team this preseason? Would you have listed another camp battle higher? Who will win the aforementioned camp battles?
