Fans of NFL teams await the roster cuts like a holiday anymore. Who makes their favorite team’s 53-man roster, and who becomes a free agent, and unemployed, in the blink of an eye. For a lucky few, they at least can remain with an organization rather than the alternative of waiting for the phone to ring.
Welcome to the practice squad.
After clearing waivers, each team can sign players to their official practice squad. Players who are on the practice squad can be signed by other teams, and promoted by their own organization, but can stay, learn and train with the team in hopes of making the team in the future and having a permanent home in the NFL.
For the Pittsburgh Steelers, they announced their 2019 practice squad Sunday, and the list of players is below:
- Tevin Jones, WR
- Trey Edmunds, RB
- Christian Scotland-Williamson, TE (IPP exemption)
- Kevin Rader, TE
- Patrick Morris, OL
- Derwin Gray, OL
- Henry Mondeaux, DL
- Robert Spillane, ILB
- Marcus Allen, S
- Trevon Mathis, CB
One player of note is WR Diontae Spencer . It was reported Saturday the Steelers wanted to sign him to their practice squad, but he was claimed off waivers by the Denver Broncos.
Additionally, the Steelers have only signed 10 players at this time. They have one more spot which can be filled when they choose.
The practice squad can change, just like the team’s 53-man roster can certainly change between now and the Week 1 game vs. the New England Patriots. Therefore, stay tuned in to BTSC for the latest news and notes surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers as they prepare for the regular season!
