I was cleaning up my DVR this week from various kid shows and holiday specials when I saw I only had one game of the Pittsburgh Steelers still available for me to watch. Since it was the Week 17 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens, it was very easy to decide to delete it. It got me thinking about The Steelers 2019 season as I usually have at least one game I decided to keep for throughout the off-season for whenever I needed my Steelers fix. But for 2019, I never seemed to keep any of the games.
I tried to think back to see if there was a game I deleted which I shouldn’t have or if there was one that was not on TV in my area that I was unable to get at the time. But the more I thought about it, I was wondering if there was really any one game from the 2019 season which was worth watching again at this moment. And I just couldn’t think of any particular one.
To give an idea of where I’m coming from, the game which stayed on my DVR throughout last offseason was the Week 15 matchup at Heinz Field against the New England Patriots. I attended the game, so I definitely wanted to catch it on TV as well. Although it was not a high-scoring affair, watching the Steelers take down that team from up north was all I needed to remember throughout the offseason. Yes, it was disappointing knowing that team went on to win the Super Bowl while the Steelers didn’t make the postseason. But it was still the win they were looking for over the Patriots which was a long time coming.
In 2017, it was the 39-38 win over the Ravens late in the season. The year before was obviously the Christmas game against Baltimore which was one I watched repeatedly throughout the offseason. In fact, I even offered to give my son a nap while on vacation knowing the game was being replayed on NFL network. These both were signature wins for the Steelers in their respective years.
But for the 2019 season, I can’t think of any one game that really stands out as one I would want to continue to watch multiple times during the offseason. There are some candidates, but they don’t seem to live up to what I have been using as the standard over the last several seasons.
One game in 2019 which stood out was with the Indianapolis Colts, but the Steelers needed a defensive touchdown from Minkah Fitzpatrick and a missed field goal from Adam Vinatieri in order to win the game. I also considered the Los Angeles Rams when the Steelers won 17- 12. After giving up an early defensive touchdown, the Steelers kept the Rams out of the end zone the remainder of the game. But it wasn’t like the Steelers were blowing the doors off of anybody.
Other games to get consideration was the 27-3 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 4, or even the come-from-behind victory against the Miami Dolphins. But playing inferior opponents isn’t really what I want to watch in the offseason. Another game to highly consider is when the Steelers rebounded and took down the Cleveland Browns just two weeks after they fell in Cleveland. Another possibility is the Sunday night win over the Chargers in Los Angeles.
So is there a game for the 2019 season which would be considered a signature win, or did it simply not exist? Do one of the Steelers victories stand out as something to want to watch over again in the offseason? Or would I be better suited waiting for the replay of Super Bowl XLIII?
