The Pittsburgh Steelers moved their season record to 7-0 on Sunday, but with multiple injuries at the inside linebacker position they have made a move to add another piece to their defense. What started as a report has become official. The Steelers have announced the trade for inside linebacker Avery Williamson from the New York Jets.
We have traded for LB Avery Williamson & the New York Jets seventh-round selection in the 2022 NFL Draft in exchange for our fifth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.— Pittsburgh Steelers (@steelers) November 2, 2020
The trade will be official after Williamson passes a physical.@BordasLawhttps://t.co/eDBMuXiHUH
After four years in Tennessee where he started 59 games with two interceptions, two fumble recovery’s, 11.5 sacks, and over 350 tackles, Williamson signed a three-year deal with the New York Jets in 2018.
Williamson missed the entire 2019 season due to an ACL injury during the preseason at a time in many felt he should not even still been in the game.
Williamson’s remaining salary for the 2020 season is also not a major concern as his cap number for the Jets was under $5 million for 2020 according to overthecap.com. With $2 million of his cap number being from his signing bonus and almost half of the season already gone, Williamson‘s contract should cost the Steelers just under $1.5 million.
The Steelers are sending the Jets their 2022 5th-round draft pick in return for the Jets 2022 7th-round draft pick along with Williamson.

Trade terms, per source: Jets get Pitt’s 5th-round pick in 2022; Steelers get Williamson and Jets’ 2022 7th-round pick.
The Steelers have already lost 2019 1st-round draft pick Devin Bush for the season with an ACL injury and reserve linebacker Ulysees Gilbert III missed the Steelers Week 8 game with a back injury. Gilbert was placed on Injured Reserve with a back injury in 2019.
What does this acquisition mean for Gilbert and/or Robert Spillane? We will find out more on Tuesday after Mike Tomlin’s weekly press conference, but you can never have enough good, and capable, players on your roster.
