NFL Week 17 Betting Preview: Steelers currently 7-point underdogs against the Browns

Before any announcement has been made, the oddsmakers believe the Steelers will be resting players in Week 17.

The Pittsburgh Steelers got back to their winning ways and locked up the AFC North title in Week 16. Because there is little to play for and the Steelers haven’t had a bye week since...actually never in 2020, it is assumed there will be several key players taking the week off to get refreshed for the playoffs.

Which players will be sitting out for the Steelers on Sunday? Can the Steelers’ reserve players take down the Cleveland Browns and try to keep them out of the playoffs? Is the much needed rest more important than staying on the roll the Steelers got on in the second half against the Colts?

When it comes to the betting lines for Sunday’s game, the following information is the current consensus spread and over/under for the Steelers this week as reported by oddsshark.com.

Game Info: Week 17

Pittsburgh Steelers vs Cleveland Browns

Sunday, December 27, 2020 at 1:00 PM

Betting line: +7

Over/under: 42.5

Last Regular Season Meeting: Steelers (W) 38-7 vs Browns

Win streak: 2 games PIT

Last 3 Meetings: PIT 2 - 1 CLE

Last 10 Meetings: PIT 8 - 1 - 1 CLE

The opening line on the game was at +1 when the schedule was released in May. This line moved more in the Browns favor once the Steelers wrapped up the AFC North even though the Browns lost to the New York Jets. Lines have been moving heavily away from teams who are expected to rest players in Week 17 as the Kansas City Chiefs are 3.5-point underdogs at home to the Los Angeles Chargers.

Being the underdog on Sunday, the Steelers have a current moneyline on sportsbettingdime.com of +275 to win the game straight up, which is the equivalent of 11/4 odds. So a $20 bet placed on the Steelers over the Browns would have a payout of $75 ($55 plus the original $20 bet). The Browns have a current moneyline of -350, or 2/7 odds. Therefore the same $20 bet placed on Cleveland to win straight up would have a payout of $25.71 ($5.71 plus the original $20 bet) .

According to Oddsshark.com, the Steelers are 1-4 against the spread in their last 5 games and are 9-2 straight up in the last 11 games against AFC opponents. The Steelers also have gone UNDER in 4 of their last 6 games and have gone UNDER in 6 of their last 7 games playing in Cleveland.

If looking at the futures bets, the Steelers odds to win the Super Bowl vary from 11/2 to 22/1. The Steelers odds to win the AFC Championship are 13/5 odds with the Kansas City Chiefs having the best odds. As for winning the AFC North, the Steelers have locked up the division and eliminated the Browns, Ravens, and Bengals.
