Steelers Injury Report: The estimated list of 9 players who would not have practiced on Thursday

Even without practice, the Steelers were required to give an estimated injury report Thursday in order to have the required three.

In less than 24 hours from when the Steelers finished their Week 12 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens, the team has to give their first injury report for Week 13. Coming off a Wednesday game and three injury reports necessary by Saturday, the Steelers are required to give a projected injury report based on what they believe players availability would have been on Thursday had the team actually been practicing. Albeit hypothetical, here is the first injury report for the Steelers for Week 13 courtesy of the Steelers PR Department.

With the announcement of Bud Dupree going on the Reserve/Injured List, there were only two players listed on the injury report based off of an actual injury. The first was running back Jaylen Samuels who is continuing to recover from a quadriceps injury. Although he missed the Steelers game on Wednesday, it was estimated that Samuels would have been a limited participant in practice on Thursday had the Steelers been on the field.

The other player listed with an injury on the report was cornerback Steven Nelson with a knee injury. Earlier on Thursday, Coach Tomlin stated Nelson was getting an MRI on his knee and his availability for Week 13 is unknown at this time.

Also included on the report were 7 veteran players who were listed as if they would not have practiced due to a coaches decision. Those players include Ben Roethlisberger, David DeCastro, Alejandra Villanueva, Eric Ebron, Tyson Alualu, Cameron Heyward, and Vince Williams. These were the same players listed last week in the Steelers first estimated injury report other than Stephon Tuitt and Maurkice Pouncey who are both currently on the Reserve/COVID-19 List.

Simply because these players were on the injury report on Thursday does not mean they will miss time throughout the week. In essence, this hypothetical injury report is about highlighting players who will possibly be limited or unable to practice based on their injury status entering the week. As for why the coaches decisions were listed, the Steelers were simply being thorough.

As for Washington’s official injury report, you can see the names below courtesy of Steelers.com. Their report is based on their practice and not estimated.
