Fichtner needs to go (among others)

It all begins with Randy Fichtner. I am no longer the only one on the site who wants him to go. Poor utilization of the running backs, short passes on 3rd downs nowhere near the line of scrimmage, and always playing out of the shotgun are just a few of the many things that are starting to get on the nerves of fans. I realize that some of that is to keep Ben healthy and comfortable, but the playcalling is absolutely putrid on 3rd and 4th downs.

Maybe firing Keith Butler is a bit harsh because of all the good he does with sending creative blitzes, but for crying out loud play a little man coverage every now and then! Justin Layne is a press man corner. He is best when he is close to the line of scrimmage, but Butler refuses to put his corners within eight yards of the line. Can we at least change it up every now and then? I saw maybe three snaps the entire game where Layne was playing close to the line, and he blanketed his receiver in coverage each time. We allow average offenses back in the game when we play that type of defense. All I'm asking for is to mix up the coverage every once in a while.

I know that there is only one Mike Munchak, but Shaun Sarrett is clueless when it comes to scheming. The line is built to protect Ben, and they are doing a fine job in that department, but the run blocking is absolutely horrible. Everyone wants to pencil in a running back for us in round one of the draft, but I'm not sure if even the elite backs in the game could have a ton of success behind this offensive line. Hassenaur should not be on the roster period, and Pouncey and DeCastro are showing their age. I still wonder if DeCastro is bothered by the injuries from earlier this year, because I find it hard to believe how much he has regressed in just one year. Okorafor can't run block to save his life, and moving Feiler to guard has been a disaster. I believe that Sarrett may do better with some younger offensive linemen, but Sarrett struggles to attack opponents' weaknesses.

Maybe this article was too much steelerfan11 for your liking, but I had to get that off my chest after the debacle on Monday. I am seriously concerned that poor playcalling and scheming is what could keep us from winning a 7th Lombardi. I hope I'm wrong, but something has to change. We aren't beating Kansas City with this playcalling.
