For those who have been waiting, it is now safe to purchase your Minkah Fitzpatrick Steelers’ jersey

For those Steeler fans who really debate over their jersey purchases to make sure they are getting the maximum benefit for their money, a more secure option has just emerged right before the 2020 league year kicks off. In an announcement on Twitter, Steelers All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick is keeping his number 39 jersey with the Steelers.

Fitzpatrick was forced to choose number 39 for the rest of the 2019 season when he was traded to the Steelers prior to Week 3 because safety Kam Kelly was already wearing the number 29 jersey which Fitzpatrick had worn with the Dolphins. NFL rules prohibit players from changing numbers during the season while playing for the same team, so making a deal to switch numbers was not a possibility for the 2019 season. With Kelly being released from the Steelers prior to Week 16 after an arrest for making terroristic threats, the number is currently available for the 2020 season. But after earning All-Pro honors, Fitzpatrick has decided to stick with the number which has done well for him thus far in Pittsburgh.

According to Teresa Varley of Steelers.com Fitzpatrick had the same philosophy when assigned his number his freshman year at Alabama.

In his time with the Steelers, Fitzpatrick has five interceptions and two fumble recoveries with a total of two touchdowns. Most of Fitzpatrick statistics came in his first seven games with the Steelers as defenses did all they could to avoid him during the last half of his stent in Pittsburgh.

Many fans much like myself were waiting on the future of Fitzpatrick’s number in Pittsburgh before purchasing a jersey. Now that he appears he’s locked in with the number 39, many fans will be more willing to invest their hard earned money in support of the Steelers young phenom.
