Second of our 90-part series— yes, 90 parts, assuming the roster does not change before we are complete— will break down each player of the Steelers current 90-man roster in alphabetical order. This series will encompass many aspects of each players game and their current role with the team. At the end, I’ll give some projected stats as well as their chances to make the 53-man roster.
Let’s move on to Steelers 2019, reserve safety who spent the majority of the year on the practice squad.
Marcus Allen
Position: S
Height: 6’ 2”
Weight: 215 lbs
College: Penn State
Draft: 5th round pick 148th overall in 2018
2019 stats
1 Game played
Contract remaining
Expires in 2020
$675,000 salary cap number (0.3% of total cap)
$0 dead money
$675,000 cap savings if cut
Likelihood of making the roster
On the bubble. The Steelers didn’t add much to its safety room in the 2020 offseason, however Allen is going have to straight-up beat Jordan Dangerfield to definitely earn a spot on the roster. Fitzpatrick, Edmunds and even Antoine Brooks Jr. will all make the roster. That fourth spot will be up for grabs.
2020 projection
Allen has struggled to crack the roster but if he does in-fact makes the 53 don’t expect more than a special teams player. An injury to Minkah or Edmunds would likely see the team turn to the veteran free agent well.
Projected stats:
10 games played
5 Tackles
Summary
The Penn State alumni could find himself out of a job after training camp. He would be an easy cut after all, with no new dead money (he already carries $146,318 in dead money from when he was cut at the beginning of the 2019 season) the team could easily move on from Allen. It’s his job to play himself onto the roster. I’m excited to see whether or not he can do it.
