Does Josiah Coatney have a shot at making the Steelers 53-man roster?

We are humming right along to part 18 of our 90-part series— assuming the roster does not change before we are complete— which will break down each player of the Steelers current 90-man roster in alphabetical order. This series will encompass many aspects of each players game and their current role with the team. At the end, I’ll give some projected stats as well as their chances to make the 53-man roster.

Let’s take a look at 2020 UDFA:

Josiah Coatney

Position: DT
Height: 6’ 4”
Weight: 325 lbs
College: Mississippi
Draft: UDFA in 2020

2019 stats (Mississippi)

12 Games played
46 Total tackles
3 Sacks
1 Fumble recovery

Contract remaining

Expires in 2022

$615,000 salary cap number (0.31% of total cap)

$5,000 dead money

$610,000 cap savings if cut

Likelihood of making the roster

Unlikely. It’s probably time for someone to bump big Dan McCullers off the roster, but I don't think Coatney is the guy to do it. The team is loaded at D-Line, even if Coatney explodes in camp he would only be a candidate for the practice squad at best. Just look at the names ahead of him on the depth chart:

Cameron Heyward
Stephon Tuitt
Tyson Alualu
Chris Wormley
Isaiah Buggs
Daniel McCullers
Carlos Davis
Henry Mondeaux
Cavon Walker

The Steelers carried only 6 D-Lineman into Week 1 a year ago. Davis, McCullers, Mondeaux, and Walker have the inside track to winning the final spot.

2020 projection

Coatney is still a talented D-Tackle, I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up on a teams practice squad in Pittsburgh or elsewhere.

Projected stats:

N/A

Summary

Coatney has a mountain to climb in-front of him, and only has minutes to get to the top. I suppose it’s possible that a helicopter appears, but how often does that actually happen? Keep an eye on him in the preseason, he’ll have a chance to fight for the practice squad.
