Will Alexander Myres survive pre-training camp cuts?

Breaking down every player one-by-one alphabetically on the Steelers current 90-man roster

Moving forward with part 60 of our (hopefully) 90-part series — assuming the roster does not change before we are complete — which will break down each player of the Steelers current 90-man roster in alphabetical order. This series will encompass many aspects of each players game and their current role with the team. At the end, I’ll give some projected stats as well as their chances to make the 53-man roster.

Let’s take a look at reserve defensive back:

Alexander Myres

Position: CB
Height: 5’ 11”
Weight: 192 lbs
College: Houston
Draft: UDFA in 2019

2019 stats

N/A - Member of the practice squad

Contract remaining

Expires in 2021
$610,000 salary cap number (0.30% of total cap)
$0 Dead money
$610,000 Savings if cut

Likelihood of making the roster

Almost none. Alexander Myres can only make this team by winning the sixth (and final) cornerback position. With high profile UDFA Trajan Bandy and NFL journeyman Breon Borders the likely combatants for the final spot there is a real chance the Myres may actually be cut outright before training camp even begins.

2020 projection

Unfortunately for Myres I do believe he will be cut, it’s just a matter of when. Being cut before camp even starts would be a crummy situation for the Houston alum. A best-case scenario for Myres would be to make it to training camp and show enough to be added to some teams practice squad.

Projected stats:

N/A — Cut/Practice squad

Summary

The 10 assumed pre-camp cuts throws a wrench into things, especially for players that are near the bottom of this roster. Many players, like Myres, will probably have to nervously wait for a phone call as they are packing for a training camp that they don’t even know if they will attend. Plus, if lighting were to strike and he were to actually make the team, he would need to be prepared to be quarantined away from his family for roughly 5 months.

This is a really tough time for fringe roster players. Lets’ just hope the Steelers select the right 10 players to release.
