In an attempt to keep NFL players as safe as possible on the field and to minimize the transmission of the COVID-19 virus, the NFL has worked with Oakley in developing a face shield for players. At this time, players will not be required to wear the shield according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.
All 32 clubs will have them on hand for players to test when they report to camp. But again, the expectation is they won’t be required. Meanwhile, the league and Oakley are already working on version 2.0.— Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) July 23, 2020
As the league works with the NFLPA on safety protocols for players, having a safe and functional option could go along way. But it also appears players will have the option of wearing the face shield. Additionally, the NFL and Oakley are hoping to get feedback from players as they are already working on an updated version.
The NFL is hoping the face shields would be required for all players. Perhaps once players report to training camp and are able to view the face shields for themselves it could go a long way towards determining if they will ultimately be required or just merely a safety option.
