If the Pittsburgh Steelers were forced to change their name, what would it be?

If something were to happen and the team could no longer use the word Steelers, how would you rebrand?

When news broke of Washington “Redskins” stadium sponsor, FedEx asking the organization to stop using its team name, coupled with Nike pulling all team merchandise from its website, it got me thinking about what they could change their name to.

Of course, any Washington based team can just pull on the cities political ties. They already feature the Capitals, Nationals, and... the Wizards? With their recent history of losing the Washington Generals might be an appropriate name.

But if a time ever came, which for whatever reason, saw the Steelers name become socially unacceptable and society deemed it necessary that the organization change it. How would you re-name the team?

Of course some team names around the city include:

The Penguins, who got their name because the animal lives on ice and because hockey players play on ice.

The Pirates, who were got their name back in 1890 when they signed several players from the American Association leading to the Philadelphia club owner to declare them Pirates. The name became official in 1891.

Then collegiately you have the Pittsburgh Panthers, Duquesne Dukes, Carnegie Mellon Tartans, and the Carlow Celtics.

So the Pittsburgh sports names are really all across the board and, for the most part, don't have their name for any particular rhyme or reason.

So if the Steelers couldn't be the Steelers anymore, I think you could look at it from four major categories: Natural forces, mythology, fierce animals, and warriors. I’ll propose one for each category

Pittsburgh Rapids
Named after one of the more dangerous features of flowing water. The three rivers of Pittsburgh is one of the areas most defining characteristics, and what Three Rivers Stadium was named after.

Pittsburgh Pegasus
A mythical winged divine horse derived from Greek mythology. I will admit that mythological names don't really fit with the city’s blue collar roots.

Pittsburgh Polars (the logo being a Polar Bear)
Signifying the frigid temperatures in the winter months, it’s one of the most dangerous creatures on this planet. The Polar bear is criminally underrated in the sports name world.

Pittsburgh Renegades
The betting favorite, the one name I feel like the fanbase wouldn't actually hate if this hypothetical situation were to actually arise. Renegade is already tied to Steelers football, and on its own is already a badass nickname.

What do you think? If the Steelers were forced to drop its name, what would you dub them? Make sure to vote on the poll and give us your opinion in the comments below.
