Is this the end for Mike Hilton in Pittsburgh?

Moving along to part 42 of our 90-part series — assuming the roster does not change before we are complete — which will break down each player of the Steelers current 90-man roster in alphabetical order. This series will encompass many aspects of each players game and their current role with the team. At the end, I’ll give some projected stats as well as their chances to make the 53-man roster.

Let’s dive into the Steelers slot corner:

Mike Hilton

Position: CB
Height: 5’ 9”
Weight: 184 lbs
College: Mississippi
Draft: UDFA in 2016 (Jaguars)

2019 stats

65 Total Tackles
1.5 Sacks
6 TFLs
11 Passes Defended
1 Interception
1 Forced Fumble
1 Fumble Recovery

Contract remaining

Expires in 2020
$3,259,000 salary cap number (1.83% of total cap)
$0 dead money
$3,259,000 cap savings if cut

Likelihood of making the roster

Lock. Mike Hilton will be on the Steelers roster in 2020, but where that will be is still a mystery. Hilton and Cameron Sutton are primed to go to battle over the number one nickel corner spot, as well as, the possibly filling in at safety due to injury. The pair are expected to both be on the field together during certain defensive packages.

Hilton has been a play maker for a number of years and it speaks volumes of Suttons ability to push him for the spot. It appears that whoever wins the job will earn another contract in Pittsburgh. The loser likely will have to find a new team.

2020 projection

I’m personally leaning toward Cam Sutton earning the slot corner spot. However, Hilton will see a ton of playing time as he will likely be the primary back up at both safety and corner positions. His stats will take a hit in 2020 but depending on injury Hilton could put up some similar numbers.

It will come down to whether Hilton can cover as well as Sutton or if Sutton can step up into the run like Hilton.

Projected stats:

32 Total Tackles
1 Sack
2 TFLs
4 Passes Defended
0 Interceptions
1 Forced Fumble

Summary

Mike Hilton has had to battle his entire career to play in the NFL, and in 2020 he will again have to fight for his spot in this league. Hilton’s price tag could also skyrocket at the end of this season, and with so many big ticket players in need of new deals, Hilton might be the odd man out and have to play elsewhere in 2021.
