New York Jets head coach, Adam Game reportedly pushed hard for the organization to trade away safety Marcus Maye in 2019. A deal was never completed, but after the addition of Ashtyn Davis the Jets might again be taking phone calls on the Florida alum.
Entering the final year of his entry deal, Maye would only cost the Steelers a very manageable $1,358,730. He would also immediately bolster the Steelers safety depth chart and allow the team to play with 3 safeties on the field at a time.
Currently the Steelers safety depth chart is quite sparse. After Minkah Fitzpatrick and Terrell Edmunds it looks like this: Special teamer’s Jordan Dangerfield and Marcus Allen and 2020 6th round pick Antoine Brooks Jr. Not exactly sterling, especially if an injury occurred.
Marcus Maye even put up some really good numbers a year ago including:
65 tackles
1 interception (against the Steelers)
14 passes defensed
Adding that much more production to an already stacked unit seems unfair, but this trade is well within grasp. Another reason why this is a trade that could actually happen is because the Steelers built a reputation with Maye back at his pro-day in 2017 he would then go on to have one of the best games of his career vs Pittsburgh in 2019 and effectively ended their season.
While Jamal Adams is the big fish in the trade pool right now, Marcus Maye is an affordable and believable option for the club if they decided to get serious about safety depth. If so, this is the option the team needs to explore.
