Does punter Corliss Waitman surviving cuts mean Jordan Berry’s job is in trouble?

Breaking down every player one-by-one alphabetically on the Steelers current 90-man roster

We are in the home stretch with part 81 of our 90ish-part series — assuming the roster does not change before we are complete — which will break down each player of the Steelers current 90-man (now 80-man) roster in alphabetical order. This series will encompass many aspects of each players game and their current role with the team. At the end, I’ll give some projected stats as well as their chances to make the 53-man roster.

Let’s dive into the Steelers other punter.

Corliss Waitman

Position: P
Height: 6’ 2”
Weight: 210 lbs
College: Southern Alabama
Draft: UDFA in 2020

2019 Stats (NCAA)

12 Games played
67 Punts
2,792 Punt yards
41.9 Punt average

Contract remaining

Expires in 2023
$613,000 salary cap number (.3% of total cap)
$3,000 Dead money each of the next 3 seasons
$610,000 Savings if cut

Likelihood of making the roster

50/50. That number really should be zero however with Waitman surviving the 10 man cut down I have to wonder if the Steelers are legitimately thinking about replacing Jordan Berry. One interesting stat surrounding Waitman is his 2018 punting average of 45.2 on 70 punts. Thats an NFL caliber average but still a fraction lower than Berrys 2019 average of 45.4.

Something is going on here. The punting job will be earned heading into 2020.

2020 projection

I still think Waitman will be cut, however this seemingly will go down to the wire. Lets just hope the competition brings the best out of Berry and lands Waitman a job elsewhere in the NFL.

Projected stats:

N/A - cut

Summary

Jordan Berry cooled off as the 2019 season progressed, his consistency has been a growing issue the past two years as Berry seemingly pooches a punt every few weeks. Keeping Waitman around might just be a move to put the pressure on Berry but then again the Steelers may have seen enough out of the Aussie and want to switch it up.

While a punting competition isn't exactly must see this camp battle will affect the 2020 season and it’s a battle worth noting.
