In celebration of MeUndies collaboration with Steelers receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, I got an opportunity to interview the Pro Bowl wide out. You can check out my conversation with JuJu below as well as check out his products with MeUndies!
Michael Beck: When Ben Roethlisberger got injured a year ago did it feel like there was something missing in the locker room?
JuJu Smith-Schuster: Losing a Hall of Fame quarterback early in the season, it was definitely a big loss. Ben brings so much knowledge and leadership to the locker room. He’s done it all in this league and played in so many big games so I’ve always relied on him throughout my career every week and on game days. Obviously he’s been leading the way for this franchise at the quarterback position for so many years, to lose a guy when the season has already begun makes it difficult to transition well. It’s great to have him back.
MB: What are your expectations for not only yourself but from the entire Steelers receiving unit?
JuJu: My expectation is to be the best player I can be for my teammates and do whatever is needed for the team to win. I’ve been working hard this whole past offseason to do what I need to do for our team and am excited to get onto the field and begin competing towards our goal. I want to be a productive part of our offense both as a receiver and a blocker, all I want to do is win, bring a Super Bowl back to Pittsburgh and my teammates in the receiver room have the same mindset. Our goal as a whole is to compete to win a Super Bowl.
MB: What’s the most important thing that receivers coach Ike Hilliard has taught you?
JuJu: He’s been great for me thus far. Coach has taught me how to be a better route runner, improved my technique, releases off the ball, and has been a mentor to me off the field which I appreciate.
MB: The 2017 Steelers draft class features three pro bowl players, can your group reach the heights that the legendary ’74 Class achieved?
JuJu: Those guys are legends obviously as Hall of Famers and did so much in the NFL, so much for the Steelers franchise. I have so much respect for them and all the other Steelers who played here who came before me. I can only work hard to be the best I can be and I know the guys in our class, TJ and James, are doing the same. If that’s what happens, we’d love it but we are just focused on getting better every day.
MB: When did you start saying ‘It’s Lit’ and where did it come from?
JuJu: I started saying ‘It’s Lit’ in college and got it from Travis Scott. ‘It’s Lit’ has always been something I try and live by, just being happy, being lit, enjoying life and being grateful for everything every step of the way. Life is too short to not try and be happy and look for the positives in life.
MB: Do you wear MeUndies?
JuJu: I love wearing MeUndies whether it’s the onesie or boxer briefs, they’re super comfortable and is one of the first things I put on when I wake up, go to bed, get out of the shower. They’re my go-to’s, I’ve been a huge fan of the brand ever since they sent me some product when I came into the NFL before the draft and just been crazy about the brand ever since. I really take pride in who I partner with and try to work with brands and companies that I personally love, so I’m so happy to be working with them on this project and it’s so cool to see what we put together.
MB: How’s Boujee doing?
JuJu: Boujee is lit, he’s having a great time enjoying the summer, and hanging out with his girlfriend, Portia. He’s just been doing his thing, going on walks and playing.
