How a Week 4 bye would completely change the outlook of the Steelers’ season

12 consecutive games before the playoffs without a break could cost the Steelers.

The Pittsburgh Steelers find themselves in an interesting situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The NFL is trying to think of a way to safely play the Steelers Week 4 game against the Tennessee Titans in the wake of now four Titans players and five other personnel testing positive for the virus.

One of the proposed solutions that are floating around the internet is to give the Steelers and Titans a bye week in Week 4 and reschedule the game in Week 7. Doing this would then bump the Steelers first clash to with the Baltimore Ravens into Week 8, the date of the Steelers’ original bye.

The NFL bye weeks start at the Week 5 mark of the season, and teams that get the early bye week usually get burnt out before the playoffs and don’t even come within a sniff of the Super Bowl.

Just take a look at the last 10 Super Bowl champions, and you will see an interesting trend. The majority of these teams have their bye week after the mid way point of the season, and one of the following team had a bye week before Week 7.

2019 Kansas City Chiefs: Week 12 bye
2018 New England Patriots: Week 11 bye
2017 Philadelphia Eagles: Week 10 bye
2016 New England Patriots: Week 9 bye
2015 Denver Broncos: Week 7 bye
2014 New England Patriots: Week 10 bye
2013 Seattle Seahawks: Week 12 bye
2012 Baltimore Ravens: Week 8 bye
2011 New York Giants: Week 7 bye
2010 Green Bay Packers: Week 10 bye

The last team to win the Super Bowl with the bye week before Week 7 was the 2009 New Orleans Saints that rested the majority of its roster the last three weeks of the season.

If this is the route the NFL decides to go down, the Steelers will need to start stacking wins as often as possible if they are going to want to have some fresh bodies come playoff time.

But what do you think? Should the NFL play the game as regularly scheduled, bump it until Tuesday, or play the game as a replacement for the Steelers bye week? Hit the poll and comments below
