As I’ve learned over recent years, it’s possible to bet on almost anything. I no longer have to find a buddy willing to shake on it in order to ‘put my money where my mouth is’ when it comes to almost anything dealing with sports. Be it championships, draft picks, points scored, or almost any crazy thing you can think of, chances are you can find somewhere online to place a wager.
If you were looking to place a wager on who will be the Steelers starting quarterback come Week 1 of the 2021 NFL season, the odds are already available at SportsBettingDime.com. Granted they don’t have the odds for every team as franchises who appear to have their quarterback set in stone such as the Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens, and teams of that nature. But for 19 of the NFL’s 32 teams who either have an aging quarterback or uncertainty at the position, there are opportunities to place a wager on the team’s starter for Week 1 of 2021.
When it comes to the Pittsburgh Steelers, with a quarterback who is about to turn 39 years old in the offseason, to say that there are questions going into next season would be accurate. Even after throwing for 500 yards in a playoff game, there are parts of Ben Roethlisberger‘s game where age has caught up to him. So although he is entering what would be his 18th season and his 17th as being the projected starter in Week 1, the coming weeks will tell more about Roethlisberger’s story in 2021.
Although there are many questions, Roethlisberger is still the odds-on favorite to start for the Steelers in 2021 at 4/7 odds. Roethlisberger is the only player for the Steelers with negative odds (meaning the payout would not double the original bet). If one were to wager $100 on Roethlisberger starting for the Steelers Week 1 of next season, the payout would be $150.14 with a profit less than the original wager.
What is interesting about the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback situation is they had the second most players listed with odds of being a starter next year with six different players. The only team with more quarterbacks listed than the Steelers was the New England Patriots who had 10 players with whom bettors could wager on being their starter for Week 1 of 2021.
As many would expect, the next best odds of being Steelers starter in Week 1 belong to Mason Rudolph at 5/2 odds. The same $100 bet placed on Rudolph to be the Steelers starter next year would earn a payout of $350 should it be the case.
Of the other names listed for the Steelers, one which hasn’t got any traction throughout much of Steelers Nation is Jimmy Garoppolo. While the Jets’ Sam Darnold has higher odds to be the Steelers’ starter next season than Garoppolo, at least his name has been mentioned in some circles when it comes to the Steelers in 2021.
It would be of note that one player missing from the list of possible starting quarterbacks in 2021 for the Pittsburgh Steelers is current third-string quarterback Josh Dobbs.
Here is the complete list of players and their odds of being the Steelers’ starting quarterback in Week 1 of the 2021 season according to SportsBettingDime.com:
Pittsburgh Steelers
1. BEN ROETHLISBERGER: 4/7 (-175)
2. MASON RUDOLPH: 5/2 (+250)
3. SAM DARNOLD: 65/1 (+6500)
4. JIMMY GAROPPOLO: 75/1 (+7500)
5. DWAYNE HASKINS: 90/1 (+9000)
6. JAMEIS WINSTON: 150/1 (+15000)
7. FIELD: 28/1
*NOTE: Odds were determined prior to any coaching changes by the Steelers
Sam Darnold appears on four other teams lists as a possible starter for 2021 with his greatest odds being for the New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers, and the Denver Broncos which were all higher than his odds to be with the Steelers. Jimmy Garoppolo appeared on two other lists other than the Steelers and was the top odds for both the San Francisco 49ers and the New England Patriots.
While many teams also included odds with quarterbacks who could be drafted in the 2021 NFL draft, the Steelers list did not include any of these quarterbacks as the 24th pick appears to be out of the running for the other players listed.
So who do you think will be the Steelers starting quarterback in 2021? Which option seems to be the most far-fetched? Make sure you vote in the poll and leave your comments below.
