The Pittsburgh Steelers made two bold, and strong, statements in the 2021 NFL Draft by selecting TE Pat Freiermeuth in the second round and C Kendrick Green in the second round of the selection process. With the 55th and 87th picks on Day 2, the Steelers took Freiermeuth and Green without thinking about other prospects who might have been available when it was their turn to select, but this doesn’t seem to bother Mike Tomlin or Kevin Colbert.
Without looking ahead, the Steelers did something they needed to do in fortifying the offensive front on Day 2. Freiermeuth is known as a great two-way tight end, and Green is the type of physical center who can put the nasty back into the run game. This a running game which ranked dead last in both yards per game and yards per attempt. After addressing the offensive line, which they might continue do on Day 3 of the draft, the Steelers’ running game should be improved in 2021.
The addition of Najee Harris in the first round combined with Freiermeuth and Green, the Steelers have gone all offense on the first two days of the draft for the first time since 1995 when they took Mark Bruener, Kordell Stewart and Bredan Stai for the first three picks of the draft.
