While NFL fans patiently await the NFL Schedule Release Show at 8 PM on Wednesday, the Steelers Week 1 opponent has already been announced. According to ESPN’s Field Yates, the Steelers will face the Bills in Buffalo at 1 PM on CBS.
The full slate of Week 1 CBS games:
— Field Yates (@FieldYates) May 12, 2021
* Jaguars at Texans, 1 PM ET
* Steelers at Bills, 1 PM ET
* Jets at Panthers, 1 PM ET
* Cardinals at Titans, 1 PM ET
* Chargers at Washington, 1 PM ET
* Browns at Chiefs, 4:25 ET
* Dolphins at Patriots, 4:25 ET
This marks the seventh-straight season the Steelers will open the regular season on the road. It’s unclear if this is something they have requested from the NFL as no other team has had half that many straight games of opening away from their own stadium. The last time the Steelers opened up the regular season at Heinz Field was in 2014 against the Cleveland Browns.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have faced the Buffalo Bills in the regular season 24 times beginning in 1970. All time, the Steelers are 14–10 when facing the Bills in the regular season and 2-1 in the playoffs for a total record of 16-11. When traveling to Buffalo, the Steelers are 6–8, but have won four of their last five matchups. The only time the Steelers have faced the Bills to open the season was in a 28-17 victory in Buffalo in 1978.
The Steelers will have nine regular season home games in 2021 as the NFL expanded to 17 regular-season games. With the AFC in the rotation to get the extra home-field game first, the Steelers hosts the Seattle Seahawks as the game that was inserted into the schedule.
