Did the Steelers find a diamond in the rough in James Pierre?

Day 22 of the Steelers Trifecta! Featuring James Pierre, Kevin Rader, and Dax Raymond

NFL: Denver Broncos at Pittsburgh Steelers Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Welcome to the Steelers Trifecta! Over the 30 days leading up to the Pittsburgh Steelers 2021 training camp, we will be highlighting three players every day in order cover the entire 90-man offseason roster. So without further ado, here are today’s three players:

James Pierre

NFL: Denver Broncos at Pittsburgh Steelers Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Position: Corner
Age: 24
Year: 2
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 185
Drafted: UDFA 2020
College: Florida Atlantic
Roster Outlook: Very Likely
Analysis:

James Pierre burst onto the scene when the Steelers played him a considerable amount of snaps in their wildcard game against the Browns. Pierre was a shutdown corner and didn't look out of place whatsoever. He will push Cameron Sutton for starting corner minutes and might even hit the field in sub-packages. For as bad as the Steelers have been at drafting corners, they may have found another gem in the undrafted ranks.

Position: Tight End
Age: 26
Year: 1
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 250
Drafted: UDFA 2018 (Packers)
College: Youngstown State
Roster Outlook: 50/50
Analysis:

Kevin Rader is another player who's performance led to an increase of playing time. Once just a practice squad player, Rader made himself seen laying some heavy hits in special teams. Rader turned that success into some offensive snaps and will have the chance to compete with Zach Gentry for the third tight end spot here in 2021. Rader likely has the edge as he is the better special teamer.

Dax Raymond

Position: Tight End
Age: 26
Year: 1
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 255
Drafted: UDFA 2019 (Packers)
College: Utah State
Roster Outlook: Unlikely
Analysis:

Dax Raymond is firmly placed as the Steelers fifth tight end he will not have an easy time at all not only making the team but the practice squad altogether. Some times players get stuck in bad situations and Raymond is in one of those circumstances. Thankfully for Raymond is he has a lot of NFL experience and in the event of an injury could be brought on the roster for his knowledge and price tag alone.
