Steelers add another running back ahead of the Hall of Fame Game

In the ever evolving 90-man roster the Pittsburgh Steelers have during the first portion of training camp, a new player has been added ahead of Thursday’s Hall of Fame game as the Pittsburgh Steelers have signed running back Tony Brooks–James.

Undrafted out of the University of Oregon, Brooks–James signed with the Atlanta Falcons for his rookie season of 2019. Released after training camp, Brooks–James spent time on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad before joining the Steelers mid season. Brooks–James appeared in three games for the Steelers in Week 9 through Week 11. In Pittsburgh, Brooks had eight rushes for 7 yards over the three games. Brooks also returned two kickoff‘s for 32 yards.

After being released by the Steelers, Brooks–James finished 2019 with the Minnesota Vikings practice squad and signed a Reserve/Future contract. Released early in training camp in 2020, Brooks–James found his way back to the Falcons via their practice squad and was activated for one game where he rushed for 4 yards on three attempts.

After signing a Reserve/Future contract with the Falcons for 2021, Brooks–James was released last week and has now landed back in Pittsburgh.

To make room on the 90 man roster, the Steelers released linebacker Jarvis Miller who had been signed by the Steelers at the end of March.

The fact that Steelers chose to add a running back to the roster going into Thursday’s game is quite interesting. On Monday, Benny Snell Jr. was not at Steelers practice and head coach Mike Tomlin referred to the situation by saying, “Right now, we’re exploring his status.” At this time, the exact nature of Snell’s absence has not been reported.
