The Pittsburgh Steelers are known for their outside linebackers, but pretty soon they will be known more for their outside linebackers who have been claimed off waivers by other teams.
As NFL rosters had to be trimmed to 53 players, the Steelers were hoping to get 6th round pick Quincy Roche through waivers and onto the team’s practice squad. It didn’t work out as planned, and the New York Giants claimed Roche off waivers before he could be brought back into the Steelers organization.
Leading up to the Week 3 game vs. the Cincinnati Bengals, the Steelers knew they would be without two of their top three pass rushers. With Alex Highsmith and T.J. Watt out, the team promoted Derrek Tuszka from the practice squad for the game. The team would be able to add Tuszka back on the practice squad without clearing waivers, but the Steelers decided t keep Tuszka on the 53-man roster and release Jamir Jones.
Like Roche, Jones would have to clear waivers before being signed to the team’s practice squad, and like Roche he was claimed before being able to do so. This time it wasn’t the Giants, but the Los Angeles Rams who signed the former Steelers linebacker.

The Steelers now have a vacancy on their practice squad to fill, and it feels as if they just got burned for the second time this season trying to move a player to the practice squad. It just so happens it is at the same position, and a position where the Steelers have serious questions about the depth on their active roster.
