After watching Mike Tomlin’s sit down with Ryan Clark on Ryan Clark’s show "The Pivot", and listening to the way Tomlin goes about things, I was irked that much more by PFF’s latest ranking of Steelers coach Mike Tomlin. PFF recently ranked Mike Tomlin outside of the top 10 in their latest head coach rankings. Let me start off by saying I do not hold much if really any stock in PFF and their views and rankings on anything, however this seems to be a common trend around the league. Mike Tomlin is consistently under ranked, and I’m here to tell you why he is arguably the greatest current coach in the National Football League.
Let’s just start off with the simple fact that the guy wins. I know you’ve heard it tons of times before, but yes Mike Tomlin still does not have a losing season under his belt. The playoff success hasn’t been there especially as of late, and that bothers me as much as anyone else, and I will get to that in a little bit, but never having a losing season is not something that should be taken lightly. For example, the first season Tom Brady left for Tampa Bay, and Bill Belichick found himself without Tom Brady, Bill himself had a losing season. Now I know we haven’t really seen Tomlin without Ben, but we got a glimpse of it in 2019, when Tomlin led the Steelers to an 8-8 record, which was actually 8-6 in games started without Roethlisberger.
As mentioned, I am as upset about anyone in the lack of playoff success by the Steelers recently in the Tomlin Era, but besides coach Belichick, no one has had true playoff success. Mike Tomlin has won as many super bowls as any coach besides Bill since he’s entered the league, and he’s also been to as many Super Bowls besides Bill since he has entered the league. I don’t think people truly understand how hard it is to win in the playoffs, and this right here shows it, no one besides the patriots have had true playoff success.
Finally, I want to talk about the obvious, the respect and praise Tomlin receives from the players. No coached is talked about as highly by the players as coach Tomlin. In my opinion, players opinions of coaches should be valued way higher than just random talking heads such as you see on ESPN or even random people like myself. Coach Tomlin has a unique way of reaching all kinds of players, not only on the field but off the field. He is able to serve as a father figure for some and a mentor for most. He brings out the best in every player, and that shouldn’t be taken lightly. He was able to handle Antonio Brown and all of his baggage and problems for tons of years while coaches like Belichick and Gruden couldn’t even do it for a month. Coach Tomlin has a way of talking to the media and keeping the locker room cool when every one else can’t.
In my honest opinion it is hard for me to see why Steeler fans do not like this man. In my opinion he is the second best coach in the NFL just behind Belichick, who lets be honest, has never done anything without Tom Brady. If Mike Tomlin is able to win a Super Bowl without Ben Roethlisberger before Belichick is able to win one without Brady, I will without a doubt believe that Tomlin is the best coach in the National Football League.
Where do you have Tomlin ranked and why? Let me know. Cheers!
