NFL Week 13: Games of the week, game picks from Behind The Steel Curtain

The team with the NFL’s best-record is currently an underdog on their home field.

NFL: Buffalo Bills at Philadelphia Eagles Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

Welcome to Week 13! Wait, what? Already? The season is flying by, and the biggest matchup of the weekend will feature the Philadelphia Eagles, who hope to “fly Eagles fly” past the San Francisco 49ers in the city of brotherly love.

It’s time to give our predictions on that heavyweight bout, along with a matchup of AFC playoff contenders and two of the NFL’s most historic franchises.

Allow me to help you try and win some cold hard cash courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook. Here’s a look at our games of the week.

Denver Broncos vs. Houston Texans (-3.5)

I’m staggered that this matchup has major playoff implications in the AFC race. The Texans finished with a record of 3-13-1 last season, and the Broncos went 1-5 in their first six contests this year. Yet here we stand - with a meaningful matchup in week 13.

The Broncos are currently riding a five-game win streak, including victories over the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills. QB Russell Wilson has experienced a bit of a revival, but that pales in comparison to Denver’s defense. The Broncos allowed 70 points to the Miami Dolphins in Week 3. In their last five games, however, they’ve allowed a total of just 80 combined.

However, this won’t be a walk in the park for them in Houston. Texans QB CJ Stroud is still squarely in the MVP race, tossing 19 TDs to just five interceptions this season, and has only a 2.4 turnover-worthy play percentage.

Currently, 60% of bettors are backing the Broncos +3.5 — and while that hook is tempting, I think we see Stroud bounce back in a big way coming off a home loss against the Jacksonville Jaguars. I’ll go with a score prediction of Houston 27-Denver 20.

Pick: Houston -3.5

San Francisco 49ers vs. Philadelphia Eagles (+3)

The Eagles are a league best 10-1 and are playing at home, where they are undefeated this year. However, they enter this game as an underdog against the 49ers. Strange.

Philadelphia coach Nick Sirianni said, “This city plays the underdog role well,” and compared this matchup to Rocky vs. Apollo Creed.

On the flipside, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said he doesn’t understand how his team is the favorite. Savvy choice of words.

The 49ers enter this game extra rested after a Thanksgiving win over the Seattle Seahawks last Thursday. The Eagles mounted a furious comeback against the Buffalo Bills and won 37-34 in overtime in what was for my money, the best game in the NFL all season.

Bettors are currently almost split right down the middle, as 53% of the money is on Philadelphia with the points. I’d be shocked if these teams don’t meet again in January for a chance to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl, just like they did last season. For now, I think the 49ers enact revenge and steal one in Philly.

Pick: San Francisco -3

Kansas City Chiefs vs. Green Bay Packers (+5.5)

Here lies a rematch of the first-ever Super Bowl which was played on January 15th, 1967. If you didn’t watch it, the NFL’s Green Bay Packers defeated the AFL’s Kansas City Chiefs by a score of 35-10.

...I expect this one to play out a little differently.

The Packers have won back-to-back games in impressive fashion, including lighting up the scoreboard in Detroit on Thanksgiving in a 29-22 win. But this Kansas City defense hasn’t allowed more than 24 points in a single game this year.

When reigning MVP QB Patrick Mahomes is at his best, there aren’t any in the league better. Last week he won AFC Offensive Player of the Week after going 27 of 34 for 298 yards and two touchdowns in a win over the Las Vegas Raiders.

I anticipate the Packers taking a step back, as the reigning Super Bowl champion Chiefs usually start to find their swagger towards the end of the season. Right now, 71% of the money is on Kansas City giving the points. Let's not mess around here. Take the Chiefs!

Pick: Kansas City -5.5
