It hasn’t exactly been a record week for Steelers receiver George Pickens. After another performance that saw his production be less than what he would hope (three catches for 47 yards vs. Colts), the former second-round pick took aim at the media for questioning his effort on a run play where he simply stopped blocking.

In a rare occurrence, Mike Tomlin spoke to the media outside of his weekly press conference and addressed the comments of his receiver.

“George is a talented guy but he’s growing and growing in a lot of ways in regards to football and life,” Tomlin said. “We don’t run away from that. We run to that organizationally when we draft guys. We’re committed to being a component of their growth and development in all areas.”

Tomlin continued.

“I would like him to be more professional in terms of addressing some of his shortcomings with you guys to further add fluidity to the process... He’s not helping himself, he’s not helping the process in the manner in which he’s dealt with you...”

Tomlin also said that Pickens needs to learn his words track attention.

“When you’re winning and doing your jobs, a lot of the attention is on things such as that,” Tomlin said. “When you’re not doing your job and losing, you better keep your damn mouth shut and understand that that tracks a certain type of attention, as well.”

Tomlin also added that Pickens will play this week against the Cincinnati Bengals. When asked if there will be any sort of discipline handed down to his receiver, Tomlin said it won’t be anything he was “going to discuss with [the media].”
