Memorial Day is a good day for Power Rankings.
Or something.
We don't condone the practice of creating our own Power Rankings, choosing, rather, to mock and ridicule the Power Rankings of others. It's easier, and we're right far more often than we're wrong. Seems like a no-brainer.
If nothing else, we hope to be entertained when reading them. Mile High Report writer Tim Lynch put the Steelers at 16 in their latest Power Rankings, which is, obviously, bogus and sad (perhaps fair, though).
But Lynch writes it up well, makes decent arguments and throws some humor in it. That always helps swallow the bitter pill of being ranked around Indianapolis and Detroit.
The good news is, at the time of publication, 65 percent of readers had voted "Too Low" when asked to evaluate their placement in this list. So we have that goin' for us. Which is nice.
Writes Lynch:
"The Steelers are good enough to keep the mediocrity alive, so either they have to grind their way back into the top echelon of teams or they need to blow it up and start over with a really bad season."
It seems more like the presence of a really bad season would lead to the "blow it up" part, he is essentially right. This is true of most teams in the NFL, especially the middle-of-the-road teams like the Steelers were in 2013. He notes a positive draft, which we agree with, and the difficulty of figuring out where exactly this team should rest in an early prognostication of the 2013 season.
It's a tough job, that's for sure. Perhaps even tougher than covering a mediocre receiver in a third-and-long situation with under a minute to play ahead by six points when the only hope a team has is a safety violating the cardinal rule, "don't get beat deep."
Mr. Lynch is likely more mad than I over that situation. We'll leave MHR and Steelers fans in peace by simply saying last season is over.
