The simplest focus can often be the one best suited for a challenging task.
The Steelers are 0-for-2013 - not yet having won a game this year. It seems daunting, and indeed, it is. Very few teams have started 0-3 and qualified for the postseason.
If the Steelers are to end up as one of those few teams who started 0-3 and advanced, they'll have to beat the Vikings Sunday. But that's all they're gonna be able to do. They can't win more than once, obviously, so Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor is speaking simply about getting a win Sunday.
"It is a big game for us -- 0-3, the odds are not too good for the near future," Taylor told Post-Gazette reporter Ed Bouchette. "That's just how it is. But we dug ourselves a hole, we have to dig ourselves out."
While the Steelers' offense has no doubt struggled to this point of the season, some of that can be placed on the defense - a unit that has three sacks (last in the NFL) and no takeaways (only team in the league without one).
The Vikings have been a turnover-prone team through three games, but seven of their 10 have come from the hands of quarterback Christian Ponder. Matt Cassel will start in Ponder's place - a quarterback who's turned the ball over six times in three career starts against the Steelers.
If Taylor and the Steelers want to start digging out of that hole, stealing a few possessions from their opponent would be a good place to start.
