The Pittsburgh Steelers have already moved ahead of the New York Jets in the AFC Playoff Picture heading into Week 16, but there is a very realistic scenario which could find Pittsburgh clinching a playoff spot this weekend.
SCENARIO: If the Steelers beat the Baltimore Ravens in Week 16 at M&T Bank Stadium, and the New England Patriots defeat the New York Jets, the Steelers would punch their ticket to the postseason dance for the second straight season.
For those who think the Patriots might lay down and not want to play their starters, something Bill Belichick has done in the past, they still have something to play for. If the Patriots win Sunday they will clinch the No. 1 seed in the AFC Playoffs and secure home field advantage for the entire postseason. The fact the road to Super Bowl 50 would go through Gillette Stadium means there is plenty to play for in Week 16.
The AFC Playoff picture could certainly be mixed up with the AFC South, AFC West and even the AFC North not officially decided with two weeks left in the regular season. For the Steelers, just securing a spot will be well worth it as they are considered by many to be the hottest team in the NFL right now.
Regardless, the Steelers will likely ignore the "elevator music", as Mike Tomlin calls it, and focus solely on beating their AFC North rival Ravens on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. After all, if they win their final two games they would secure their spot within the AFC elite, and begin their quest for their 7th Lombardi trophy in the organization's history.
