When the Pittsburgh Steelers selected Sammie Coates in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft, they were simply adding another weapon to Todd Haley's already dynamic arsenal. After all, with Ben Roethlisberger at the helm, Le'Veon Bell at running back and Antonio Brown out wide you have a unit which could start for nearly all 32 NFL teams. Throw in Martavis Bryant, Markus Wheaton, DeAngelo Williams and Heath Miller and you have yourself something special.
Now Sammie Coates is attempting to stake his claim within the offense, and trying to find his place.
"I'm just trying to do everything I can to showcase I'm an all around guy who can play anywhere," Coates told Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com.
There isn't a massive amount of pressure on Coates to perform as a rookie, just look at the names listed above for the reason why. However, Coates is looking to show his versatility and knowledge of the playbook when training camp starts in a few weeks. What he also realizes is he can't press when camp finally rolls around.
"You have to go there and be relaxed," Coates said. "You can't think about all the plays. You have to make the plays that present themselves to you."
Making plays will be important, but learning from players like Brown and veteran receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey will be invaluable to the rookie receiver as he attempts to put his stamp on the team's offense. As Coates is grateful for the opportunity, doesn't mean he is going to be satisfied playing special teams, or watching from the sidelines. He looks to prove he can play as a regular on the 2015 Steelers team, and by doing so competing with Brown, Bryant, Wheaton and Heyward-Bey.
"You've got to showcase you can do everything they can do," Coates said.
Big words for a young player, but if Coates knows anything, it is the amount of potential on the team's roster heading into the season. There has been a lot of hype surrounding the offense heading into next season, and Coates is as excited as anyone to see what this unit can do.
"It's going to be fun to watch us play this year," he said.
As Terrell Owens once said, "Get your popcorn ready."
