NFL Preseason: Injuries around the league

The preseason is in full swing, and several teams have already sustained injuries to key players.

Pittsburgh Steelers placekicker Shaun Suisham was sidelined for the season last week after he suffered an ACL injury in the first preseason game. Suisham is not the only high profile player out with a significant injury. Let's take a look at other injuries of note around the league.

Chicago Bears WR Kevin White might miss his entire rookie season. It was announced Saturday that a stress fracture he sustained in his shin earlier this summer would require surgery. Sad news for the seventh overall pick in the 2015 draft, and bad news for a team that recently lost its star receiver Brandon Marshall to the New York Jets. Alshon Jeffery missed his first preseason game due to a calf injury. He's been spotted in a walking boot.

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas fractured his hand during Friday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The former standout for the Denver Broncos will definitely be out for the rest of the preseason, but his team has reason to hope he could be back on the field for the first week of the regular season. Jaguars safety Johnathan Cyprien went out with a fractured finger.

New York Giants rookie safety Mykkele Thompson was carted off the field with an Achilles injury Fellow rookie safety Landon Collins went down with a sprained MCL. The Giants cannot afford to lose players in their already weak secondary.

San Diego Chargers OLB Tourek Williams is out with a broken foot that requires surgery. While Williams is not a huge contributor to the Chargers, his injury is still disheartening. Offensive lineman Johnnie Troutman broke his arm in the second quarter.

Dallas Cowboys second-year DT Chris Whaley tore his Achilles at practice last Monday. A torn ACL kept Whaley out his rookie season.

Detroit Lions RB Joique Bell has been on PUP recovering from surgeries to his Achilles and knee. Bell tallied 860 rushing yards and 322 receiving yards last season. Meanwhile, second-round pick Ameer Abdullah had a strong performance against the Jets, including a 45-yard run early in the game.

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster is out with a serious groin injury that will have him sidelined through at least week 10 when the Texans face the Cincinnati Bengals. Without a strong quarterback, the Texans will definitely miss Foster.

Miami Dolphins WR DeVante Parker was hurt during OTAs and underwent foot surgery which will keep the 2015 first-round pick out for the foreseeable future. WR Kenny Stills is sidelined with a calf injury.

Minnesota Vikings OT Phil Loadholt tore his Achilles Saturday against the Buccanners. Loadholt signed a four-year $25 million contract in 2013. Known as a reliable run blocker, Loadholt's absence could have a negative impact on RB Adrian Peterson, who, incidentally, has been struggling with a nagging thigh injury.

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller had knee surgery on Friday. Nonetheless, the team expects him to be ready by the start of the regular season. CB Brandon Browner suffered an injury in the Saints August 13 preseason game.

New York Jets QB Geno Smith was socked in the jaw. He'll need surgery and will be out for at least six weeks, and as many as 10. DE Muhammad Wilkerson has also been struggling with a hamstring problem.

St. Louis Rams RB Todd Gurley is still recovering from an ACL injury he sustained last November when he was still playing for Georgia. The first-round pick will miss the preseason and may miss several games of the regular season as well.

Washington TE Logan Paulsen is out for the season after needing surgery on his big toe. Another TE out for the whole season is Niles Paul. TE Jordan Reed has a hamstring injury that is not considered to be too severe. RB Silas Redd is also out for the season with a torn ACL and MCL.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RT Demar Dotson hobbled off of the field during Saturday's game against the Minnesota Vikings. The starting right tackle is believed to have an MCL sprain and will undergo an MRI for confirmation.
