Steelers safety Mike Mitchell fined $48,620 for late hit on Chiefs QB Alex Smith

The Pittsburgh Steelers safety will be lighter in the wallet this week after his late hit on Alex Smith Sunday.

Following the Steelers 19-13 win over the Chiefs in Week 6, one of the many hot topics being discussed was the late hit on Alex Smith by safety Mike Mitchell.

Was it dirty?

Was he pushed?

Everyone seemed to have their own interpretation of the play, but the NFL made their stance very clear — it was a bad hit.

How bad? Mitchell was fined $48,620 dollars for the hit, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Per Schefter, Mitchell is appealing the fine, but there are simple facts which go against Mitchell. He has been fined for hits before, the play was flagged during the game and he hit a quarterback. All those don’t bode well for a reduction, or elimination of a fine, but you can’t blame Mitchell for trying.

Chiefs fans will feel a sense of vindication after having an issue with the play the past week after the team’s first loss of the season, but Steelers fans will likely see this as just another storyline as their favorite team prepares for the Bengals in Week 7 after their biggest win of the season.
