The Zach Mettenberger era with the Steelers officially ends with his release

The Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t feel the need to keep Mettenberger around after drafting Joshua Dobbs in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Well, there is that.

With so many fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers hoping to see Zach Mettenberger get a shot with the team, even as just the primary backup, it was not in the cards.

The Steelers released Mettenberger May 1st, this after drafting Joshua Dobbs in the 4th round of the 2017 NFL Draft, as well as signing an undrafted rookie free agent quarterback as well.

Mettenberger never played in an official game for the black and gold since being picked up off waivers after the Chargers parted ways with the former LSU quarterback.

However, with Mettenberger out of the way, it gives Dobbs a clear lane to making the football team. Sure, he most likely won’t ever see a helmet on game day without an injury to someone ahead of him, but it certainly makes his life a lot simpler when it comes to preparing for the upcoming offseason and training camp.

Mettenberger hits the open market, and the Steelers will roll into the offseason with the following QB depth chart:

Ben Roethlisberger
Landry Jones
Joshua Dobbs
Nick Schuessler

The departure of Mettenberger will have little impact on the team, but it will cut down on ‘berger jokes between Mettenberger, Roethlisberger and Pittsburgh.
