Pittsburgh Steelers announce plans to start “Hall of Honor”

The Pittsburgh Steelers have found a way to give credit to people who deserve credit for their roles in the success of the Steelers.Some NFL teams have Rings of Honor, but the Steelers are planning on their own “Hall of Honor”.

Who will be eligible for this yearly honor? Per the Steelers official website:

The Hall of Honor will induct former players, coaches, and front office personnel who were integral in creating and sustaining the franchise’s success dating back to when the team was founded in 1933.

The Hall of Honor’s Inaugural Class will be announced on Tuesday, Aug. 29, but for some, this has been a long overdue action.

“The Hall of Honor will serve as a tribute to the many individuals who have contributed greatly throughout the history of our franchise,” Steelers President Art Rooney II said. “This is probably long overdue, and we are excited to begin the process of recognizing these individuals and their accomplishments, both on and off the field, during an annual series of ceremonies.”

Here is some more information regarding the new Hall of Honor, per the team’s website:

Each inductee will receive a replica of a solid steel football, which will replicate the original that was given to Steelers’ founder Art Rooney Sr. by the United States Steel Corporation and United Steel Workers in 1982 on the occasion of the team’s 50th Season. They will be part of a display to be located inside the FedEx Great Hall at Heinz Field.

The following are the guidelines for eligibility to be considered for the Steelers’ Hall of Honor:

FORMER PLAYERS:

• Retired for at least three seasons

• Must have played for the Steelers for a minimum of three seasons

• Should possess noteworthy career highlights, records, and achievements

FORMER COACHES AND CONTRIBUTORS:

• Significant contributions to the team and community

This year’s Hall of Honor Selection Committee consists of Steelers President Art Rooney II, Joe Gordon, Bob Labriola, Stan Savran, and Tony Quatrini.
