Steelers grant Mike Munchak permission to interview for head coaching vacancies

Mike Munchak is a desired commodity for at least one NFL head coaching vacancy, and the Steelers aren’t going to prevent him from at least interviewing.

NFL: Pittsburgh Steelers Training Camp Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Monday, reports were released stating Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Mike Munchak was being sought after for the vacant Arizona Cardinals head coaching position. At the time, not only were these just reports, but it also highlighted the Cardinals were requesting Pittsburgh’s permission to interview Munchak.

At Tuesday’s weekly Mike Tomlin press conference, the head coach not only confirmed the reports, but stated they would allow Munchak to interview for the job:

While the Steelers have granted permission, it doesn’t necessarily mean Munchak will get the job. Pittsburgh could have blocked the interview, but you can imagine the amount of professional respect they have for a person like Munchak.

The interview will likely happen this week, as the team has the bye in the AFC Playoffs before hosting any number of teams in the Divisional Round at Heinz Field.

It is also worth noting Tomlin said he has not been contacted by any other teams regarding other assistants for vacancies.
