The Pittsburgh Steelers defense is filled with stars all across the board, but one player that may be overlooked is safety Damontae Kazee.
Kazee, 30, began the season as a backup but has moved into the starting lineup due to injuries with players like Keanu Neal. Having Kazee’s veteran presence in the secondary has been a valuable asset to the Steelers, especially with rookie Joey Porter Jr.
“Man, he’s been really good and been really steady,” Tomlin said. “He’s a good communicator. He’s a veteran player. I like the relationship that he has with some of the younger guys like he and Joey Porter have an interesting relationship. Big brother, little brother, if you will. He gives Joey a hard time in all the right ways. Joey’s appreciative of his communication skills and his veteran approach, and you know, I think he’s just been really solid. I can’t say enough about him. Wish he had caught one or two of them balls he got a hand on last week but we’re working.”
Porter Jr. has emerged into a future star for the Steelers, and he could be a mainstay in the defense for years to come. The same probably can’t be said for Kazee, but his impact in Porter Jr.’s rookie year can’t be overlooked.
Kazee, Porter Jr. and the Steelers are returning to action Sunday when the Arizona Cardinals come to town. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Acrisure Stadium.
