The Pittsburgh Steelers are making a small transaction just days away from their Thursday Night Football contest against the New England Patriots, according to ESPN insider Adam Schefter.

With Kenny Pickett undergoing ankle surgery this morning, the Steelers are signing free-agent QB Trace McSorley to their practice squad, per source.

The move is significant for a few reasons, even apart from Pickett’s injury, which should keep him out for a few weeks and will definitely sideline him for Thursday’s game against the Patriots.

McSorley, a Penn State alumnus, was a sixth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens. He’s bounced around the league as a backup with the Ravens and Arizona Cardinals for the past four seasons. However, this season, he’s only been on the practice squad with the Chicago Bears and Patriots.

McSorley signed with the Pats in April and was cut ahead of the 53-man roster reveal at the end of training camp, which means he may be able to give some unique insight into some of the New England personnel, which could prove to be helpful for Thursday’s game.

The Patriots and Steelers are scheduled to kick off at 8:15 p.m. on Thursday inside Acrisure Stadium.
