Steelers 2016 Roster, 90 in 90 Days: Al-Hajj Shabazz trying to prove his worth in the Pittsburgh secondary

In a new feature at BTSC, we are breaking down the Steelers 90-man roster one player, one position, one day at a time. The conclusion of this feature will be the start of the 2016 season.

NFL: Pittsburgh Steelers-Minicamp Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Player: Al-Hajj Shabazz

Position: CB

School: West Chester

Overview: Al-Hajj Shabazz enters training camp fighting for one of the final corner back positions on the roster. He’s competing with journeyman Donald Washington and fellow undrafted free agent Montell Garner to make the 53 man roster.

While it wasn’t initially clear that any of these players would make the roster the injury to Senquez Golson has opened an opportunity for someone to make an impact. Shabazz certainly has a chance to be that player. At over six foot and 200 pounds he fits the model of the "big NFL CB" that is currently in vogue. Also, while he was in college he was able to make splash plays and create turnovers.

On the flip side he has to demonstrate that he has enough foot speed to hang with NFL receivers on vertical routes. Not an easy task for the best corners, but it can be a real challenge for players without natural, blazing speed. Also, he’s never been well known for his tackling, and that will have to improve if he’s want to stick.

Strengths:
Big frame with long arms
Should have success with press coverage
Makes plays on underneath throws

Weaknesses:
Does not have great speed
Tackling has been a weakness

Chances of Making the team: 40%
