Random Thoughts From a Black-and-Gold Mind: 82% Le’Veon Bell-Free Edition

There is a lot to talk about, and the local BTSC madman tried to not talk about Le’Veon Bell...but failed.

It’s the offseason and unusually it’s not been a quiet one for the Pittsburgh Steelers. With free agency opening on Wednesday, there’s definitely plenty to think about. But when you throw in the unending drama of the Le’Veon Bell saga, quiet goes loud in a New York minute.

With that being said, my black-and-gold mind is going faster and crazier than a coked-up hamster. The good news is that I get to pass the ravings on to you.

But first, I feel obligated to apologize for my transgressions previously in this column. So, a mix tape of melancholy is dedicated to who and why I may have offended last time out.

  • Anybody’s whose wife left them for an exterminator
  • Anybody’s whose wife stabbed them and sold their kidney on eBay
  • Keith Butler’s hearing
  • Mike Tomlin’s next man up policy
  • The guy in the comment section that feels this is a waste of his time to read and would rather me just copy and paste Walter Football.

Now for Random Thoughts From a Black-and-Gold Mind.

  • It’s time for me to jump the shark. Like the Cosby Show adding Olivia, the Brady Bunch bringing in Cousin Oliver and Diff’rent Strokes addition of Sam...I’m considering of boosting ratings myself by adopting Le’Veon Bell. Now just like him, it isn’t about the money. I just think he needs sound guidance. I’ve told my 24-year old son, “You’ve got to learn how to play the game” time and time again. Le’Veon is surely playing games, but he’s not playing “the game”. His shenanigans are now getting absurd and tiresome. His tweets are so inconsistent, that he’s not inspiring the organization to even think about giving him what he wants. At this point, I’m not certain he even truly knows what he wants. What he really needs is somebody in his inner circle to not be afraid to tell him to lay low. Family, friends and agents won’t do it, he may cut them off. I’m not calling Bell a bad dude, I just think he is being an uninformed, unrealistic, irrational flip-flopper at this point. If things aren’t fixed, the Steelers may jump the shark in other ways and give him the Suzanne Somers treatment and just move on.
  • More on Le’Veon. We as fans shouldn’t expect him to sign a long-term deal. At this point, he may be unsignable to Pittsburgh.
  • The idea that the Browns and Steelers would partner on a deal to send Bell to Cleveland to draft Saquon Barkley is a ludicrous pipe dream. It’s as crazy an idea as any of you knowing the names of the actors that played the sitcom characters above. I’d love to see Saquon in black-and-gold. I’d even give him his college number of 26. But it won't happen.

  • If the Sweathogs could Welcome Back Kotter, then the Steelers should lay out the welcome mat for Lawrence Timmons...but only at the veteran minimum, and as depth. With a thin ILB corps in Pittsburgh, his release from Miami seeming inevitable, his pocketing $11 million from that franchise in the previous eleven months and his having family in Pittsburgh...it seems probable. They still need to draft an ILB high.
  • Don’t get too excited about the Steelers making a big splash in free agency next week. Like last year with Justin Hunter, Tyson Alualu, Coty Sensabaugh and Knile Davis...any moves they make will probably be seven to fourteen days in.
  • JuJu Smith-Schuster is having fun recruiting LeBron James to play for the Steelers, and it has been entertaining to watch. The Madden simulation was pretty cool. However, I hope (and I’m sure) that this is just a way for No. 19 to score some face time and swag from King James. If he truly believes that LBJ would even consider it, I’d be worried about the sanity of JJSS.
  • The Steelers will probably make some big name cuts in the next few days. Mike Mitchell, Darius Heyward Bey, J.J. Wilcox, William Gay, Coty Sensabaugh and Daniel McCullers have all been names bandied about. I actually think a surprise name like Ramon Foster may come up. I hope not, but I wouldn’t be shocked. They are going to need to sign Chris Boswell too.

  • Richard Sherman is not coming to Pittsburgh and switching to safety. Richard Simmons is more likely to come to the Steelers and switching to an all taco diet.

And finally,

  • I wonder what Mark Stock is doing these days.

Yesterday, I was thinking about the Kansas classic Carry On Wayward Son. Kind of reminds me of No. 26. So, I ask you to ponder the significance of these lyrics...

Once I rose above the noise and confusion

Just to get a glimpse beyond the illusion

I was soaring ever higher, but I flew too high

Though my eyes could see I still was a blind man

Though my mind could think I still was a mad man

I hear the voices when I’m dreamin’, I can hear them say

Carry on my wayward son

For there’ll be peace when you are done

Lay your weary head to rest

Don’t you cry no more

Take that for what it’s worth, Go Steelers and never stop Shalieving.
